- United Nations General Assembly has recognized this day in December 1990, under its resolution 45/26.
- This resolution aims to raise awareness about increasing population along with population issues like fundamental rights, equality, development, poverty, and environment.
- World Population Day seeks is significant, because it deals with the problems of overpopulation as well as raise awareness on impacts of overpopulation on the development and environment.
- It also deals with health problems faced by childbearing women and highlights the significance of family planning, poverty, gender equality, human rights and maternal health.
